South West CX Round 3 - Torbay Velopark

REPORT:

Several club members made their way down to Torbay Velo park today for round 3 off the South West CX league. The weather has remained kind and the sun shone throughout the race. Course was dry considering the rain we have had recently and therefore running fast.

This year Mid Devon have added several new features to the course. A 40ft sand pit (with no buckets or spades) a set of stairs and some testing off camber sections with sneaky climbs.

Results are provisional at this time Mat Hewis 8th and Russell Harris in 11th for the seniors, Darren 8th and Gary Webber 15th in the vet 50’s, Roger Sheridan 4th Vet 60 and Luke Mahoney in 5th for the Juniors. Thanks to Maxine Webber and Sue McGiven for the photos.

B TEAM REPORT:

4.7km broke down into an early 900m up hill sprint a flat 380m sprint and to top it off a 3.8km climb avg 3.2% Step up punchures !! A new Role for me this week saw me in the team car and after many YouTube videos I managed to follow the guys and called the shots (well that’s how I saw it) in reality I told them when the sprints were starting with myself in the car Matthew Hewis rejoined the gang along with Neil Bennett and Ruben Stacey dynamic duo Steve Sage and Henry Dunn plus last weeks 2nd place finisher and most keenest member Ben Staley.

After a reasonably steady start last week this week defaulted back to an all out effort for the first 2kms. It eased off slightly and the team recovered best they could before the first sprint (up hill) Mr reliable Sage took 3rd spot but unfortunately was left empty handed when the in game Power up’s were dished out.

With Hewis looking strong he covered the front of the pack closing down any attempts of breakaways, allowing the others to sit in and keep their powder dry. 16.5km sprint 2 (long flat). Again Sage was there 2nd this time and boy wonder Stacey 3rd. A split in the field and with only 1.7kms before the start of the hill top finish KOM start Henry Dunn sacrificed himself to drag back Staley and Hewis to the front group, a true team player. This raised spirits and final 4 hit the climb hard, soon it strung out with Staley and Stacey finding themselves in trouble but Hewis and Sage at the pointy end, 1.5km to go final selection of 14 riders would battle it out for the stage win, our two front runners had no PU’s and in the final sprint this robbed Sage of the win!! 2nd over the line with Hewis 10th, The rest came home with great finishing positions and good points.

We are still top of the league with one race to go!

C TEAM REPORT:

With the B team unable to keep up with their winning run, it was time for the C Team to take 1st in the team event. With a team of 6 riders this week we had the return of Neil Fitzpatrick. Dave Waddington first race for the team, the return of Philip Morrish, Chris Murdoch and Greg. We had a special guest appearance from Alan Bellew to make up the team.

Following on from last week Greg took the first sprint climb and fastest through segment, Neil 4th and Chris 8th across the line, both getting top 10 fastest through. Over the crest and some rest for the guys in the front group. Some hard chasing from Dave and Phil down the rolling decent and the 5 us back in the front group. Through the Villa’s to the 400m bridge sprint, Greg 4th place and 5th fastest, Neil 9th across the line. Splits again in the group and 4k to rest up for the start of the Volcano Climb. With Dave and Phil not far behind it left 3 of us in the front to tackle the Volcano hill top finish. With 700m to go Chris started to suffer (even his aviator has ) then at 300m time to dig deep. Neil puts last week disappointment to bed and takes the win and fast segment BOOM.

Greg takes 3rd and 3rd, Chris 19th, Dave 23rd, Phil 24th and Alan taking care of his heart issues gains 13 points at 49th. Great team effort with a total of 245 points, 2nd team Herd of Fools & Horses way behind with 172 points. Back up to 4th in the league, 2nd place still a possibility. Thanks team great work!

South West CX Round 2 - Crinkly Bottom

REPORT:

Well done to all those who raced down at the South West CX series at Crinkly Bottom for round 2. The sun was shining and the course running fast and dry.

To make the event more enjoyable each lap contained a nice climb, thankfully on tarmac before descending back down. Not yet sure of positions except Roger Sheridan who unexpectedly found him self on the podium. Apologies missed one of the riders out on the photos. Thanks to Maxine Webber for the photos.
